The poisonous Flint Water Crisis has Republican hoof-prints all over it. In 1990, Michigan passed a tyrannical “emergency manager” law that allowed the governor to appoint “managers” who’d have the power to overrule democratically-elected city governments. Voters repealed that law in 2012, but it was quickly reinstated by Republican lawmakers.
Republican governor Rick Snyder appointed the emergency manager who decided to save a few bucks by switching the water supply for Flint from Lake Huron to the corrosive Flint River. The Governor’s office recently released emails that show that the manager and Snyder’s administration mocked and belittled experts and residents who warned of lead leeching into the Flint water supply and poisoning Flint’s children.
As President Obama said the other day, “It is a reminder of why you can’t shortchange basic services that we provide to our people and that we, together, provide as a government to make sure that the public health and safety is preserved.” And one more example that austerity doesn’t work.
