Donald Trump is appointing the richest cabinet in history. But more importantly, some seem to be diametrically opposed to the purpose of the departments they’ve been chosen to lead. Trump chose Betsy Davos to lead the Department of Education. Her only experience with education has been decades spent trying to undermine the public school system. Linda McMahon, a billionaire who, with her husband, operates a huge corporation has been chosen to head up the Small Business Administration. Ben Carson, who despises the safety net, is chosen to head up the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is supposed to provide a safety net that helps millions of underprivileged Americans avoid homelessness. He chose Scott Pruitt, OK Attorney General, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt believes the individual states, not the EPA, should be responsible for regulating the treatment of our environment. And he’s appointed a Secretary of Labor who opposes the minimum wage and favors automation.
After over a year of promising American voters he’d force Mexico to pay for his multi-billion dollar border wall, President Trump tries to bully Mexico’s president into considering it. …And Mexico’s president simply says forget it.
Today’s editorial cartoon: The President used the entirety of last week’s press conference to complain about the Media being unfair to him. And for the last few days, President Trump’s surrogates have appeared all over the news media to repeat his contention that the media has been unfair and vicious toward Donald Trump.
Media freedom is under attack. A religious minority is demonized by the President, who says nothing about the ensuing spike in violence against them. He dismisses the legitimacy of the courts and attempts to ignore their rulings. He attempts to erase the separation between church and state. He’s repeatedly praised autocrats and tyrants. He considers federalizing the National Guard to help root out aliens among us. He attempts to convince the people that he is the only source for legitimate news and facts, and all contradictory information is “fake.” He’s labeled those in the Fourth Estate who’ve reported on his scandals and missteps as “the enemies of the American people.” His administration specializes in “alternative facts.” He’s blended the workings of his corporation with those of government. And his party, which controls the legislature, shows no willingness to investigate his administration’s actions or oppose him on any front.
He has not built gas chambers. He has not rounded Muslims up and forced them to live in ghettos. He has not invaded other countries. He has not eliminated citizens’ basic rights. But we should not forget that the Nazi Party hadn’t done any of that either, in 1933.
